Finally, the Messi-Ronaldo Ballon d’or duopoly is being broken.

FIFA last week released a 10-man shortlist for the Best Men’s Player, to be awarded at The Best FIFA Awards ceremony slated to take place in London on 24 September 2018. While Ronaldo is the favourite to retain the award for the third consecutive year, with eternal rival Lionel Messi not too far behind, owing to their extra-terrestrial performances over the course of their careers, it is another who most deserves the award. Luka Modric has been the standard bearer for midfielders in the last five seasons, and he raised the bar further with a player-of-the-tournament performance to help his country attain a second place finish in the World Cup last month. The 32-year-old has maintained his elite level of performance since his 2012 transfer to Real Madrid from Tottenham, and owing to his performances over the last year, deserves to be named the FIFA Best Men’s Player, for several reasons… The World Cup is the grandest stage in football, and a spectacular performance at it...

Luis Suarez's hot streak continues with game winner against Valencia

Image
Feb. 03, 2018 Barcelona have a narrow lead going into next week's Copa del Rey semifinal second leg after they beat Valencia 1-0 at Camp Nou on Thursday. Luis Suarez scored the only goal of the game in the second half, heading home Lionel Messi's cross at the far post. Positives Ernesto Valverde spoke of the need to keep a clean sheet in his pregame news conference, and the fact that Valencia failed to register an away goal will have pleased him. It means that if Barca can score at the Mestalla next Thursday, Valencia will have to score three to reach the final. Samuel Umtiti was another big plus. The centre-back has been feeling his way back into action following a hamstring injury, but his performance was exceptional. Negatives Barca were good, but they were not good enough in the final third. They completed 438 passes in the first half (and had 79 percent possession) but failed to find the back of the net. It was a similar story in the second half, and they will ...

Britain proposes unlimited fines for car emissions cheaters

Image
JC News | Feb. 02, 2018 (Reuters) - Carmakers that try to cheat vehicle emissions tests could face unlimited fines and criminal charges under proposals set out on Thursday by the British government. The announcement is aimed at addressing criticism that the government was toothless in dealing with Volkswagen after a scandal that affected 1.2 million cars in Britain. The German carmaker admitted in 2015 to using software to cheat diesel emission tests in the United States and has since paid out compensation to U.S. motorists, but has refused to do so in Europe, arguing the software was not illegal there. "We continue to take the unacceptable actions of Volkswagen extremely seriously, and we are framing new measures to crack down on emissions cheats in future," said junior transport minister Jesse Norman in a statement. “Those who cheat should be held to proper account in this country, legally and financially, for their actions.” Under the proposals, companies could f...

New technology reveals numerous ancient Maya structures in Guatemala

Image
GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - Thousands of previously unknown ancient Maya structures, including pyramids, palaces and causeways, have been revealed in Guatemala following an investigation by a team of international archaeologists using ground-penetrating laser technology. The find allowed the researchers to map the outlines of what they describe as dozens of newly discovered Maya cities hidden under thick jungle foliage centuries after they were abandoned by their original inhabitants, according to a statement issued on Thursday by Guatemala's PACUNAM foundation. The ancient Maya civilization was one of the most advanced to arise in Mesoamerica, marked by sophisticated mathematics and engineering that allowed it to spread throughout present-day Central America and southern Mexico.
